Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet

Rudresh's flagship ensemble with Vijay Iyer on piano, François Moutin on bass, and Dan Weiss on drums. Album releases include Black Water (Red Giant, 2002), Mother Tongue (Pi Recordings, 2004), and Codebook (Pi Recordings, 2006) on Pi Recordings in September 2006.
US and European tours booked through 2009.

Dakshina Ensemble

Rudresh and Carnatic saxophone legend Kadri Goplanath received a Rockefeller grant to compose new work for this septet which premiered in May 2005 at the Asia Society in New York City and toured the US in Fall 2007.
Their groundbreaking CD, "Kinsmen", is available now on Pi Recordings.

Indo-Pak Coalition

Trio with Rez Abbasi on sitar-guitar and Dan Weiss on tabla. This ensemble debuted at Joe's Pub in January 2006.
CD "Apti" released on Innova in November 2008.

Mauger

A new collective trio with bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Gerry Hemingway
Their CD "The Beautiful Enabler" is now available on Clean Feed.
European tour coming in March 2009.

Raw Materials

This decade-long collaboration with pianist Vijay Iyer has toured the world over including performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Seattle's Earshot Jazz Festival, and Jazz Festival Ljubljana to name a few. Raw Materials released their first CD on Savoy in May 2006.
Watch for US and European tours in 2009.

MSG

This relatively new trio of Rudresh, bassist Ronan Guilfoyle, and drummer Chander Sardjoe debuted in Ireleand in August 2005 and also performed at the Bali Jazz Festval the following November. A European tour in September 2006 culminated in a studio recording which will be available in 2009.

Dual Indentity

Dual Identity refers to groups co-led by Rudresh and alto saxophonist Steve Lehman. Their quintet debuted in early 2004 and their duo project debuted in Fall 2004. Watch for more quintet shows and a CD release in 2009.


Samdhi

Rudresh's new electric project, a direct of result of his Guggenheim Fellowship work, features guitarist David Gilmore, bassist Rich Brown, drummer Damion Reid, and mridangist Anand Ananthakrishnan. Fall 2009 tour and CD release planned.


Past Projects

Mingus-Mahanthappa Group

This ensemble was one Carnegie Hall's musical ambassadors to New York City performing via the Neighborhood Concert Series. With bassist Kevin Mingus (grandson of legendary bassist Charles Mingus), this group has performed in duo and trio formats for several years.

Manodharma Trio

This trio with mridangam master Trichy Sankaran and pianist Vijay Iyer received a Rockefeller MAP grant to compose new work in 2001 which was presented by the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

Saturn Returns

Electric quintet with James Hurt on keyboards, David Gilmore on guitar, François Moutin on electric bass, and Derrek Philips on drums.
